Snow fell during the
night like a secret,
our morning a surprise, a
winter wonderland.
No school for days and days,
sometimes even weeks.
Dusty, bumpy gravel roads
hidden, clean, tucked
beneath flat white sheets.
Conditions too hazardous
for Mr. Robinson’s
school bus proved ideal
on a hubcap sled chained
behind Daddy’s farm truck.
No rules, no roads,
shallow ditches and
summer fields transformed
into our slippery playground.
I couldn’t feel my nose,
but miles from the world
my heart soared.

Bryan Jones says
T’was awesome and fitting for the weather and memories I’ve been having!
Dorothy Johnson says
I remember snow days when school was closed. We weren’t allowed to sled behind a moving vehicle, but we had hills where we lived! As an adult, I had a memorable sled ride with Gary down a steep hill when he was about 14. It was both terrifying and thrilling. He eventually got a chipped tooth from sledding down that hill. Glad I wasn’t on that run!
Talya Tate Boerner says
We had the Mississippi River levee for sledding and that was scary! Thanks Dorothy.
Judy Dianne Hudson Wolverton says
I lived in luxora and loved sledding. I even went 2 days after my wedding wit Gail and other friends!!!!
Aleshea Dominique says
I can remember one year, years back when I was like 13 we got a snow day and we were out of our mind with excitement. There was a big field in the neighborhood of my childhood home and all the neighborhood kids were out sleddin’ down it with anything we could find.
