What I Didn’t Buy in Alpena, Arkansas

May 30, 2018 By Talya Tate Boerner 11 Comments

What I didn't buy...

I’d always wanted to explore the vintage shops along Highway 412 in Alpena, Arkansas, yet I’d never stopped because I was on my way somewhere else. A few days ago, I made Alpena my destination. No, of course, I don’t need any stuff. This is about what I didn’t buy yet carried home anyhow.

Setting out to explore without buying is a different sort of adventure. I go with the intention of remembering.

Inspiration lives in the most unexpected places. There’s a treasure trove inside musty shops filled to the rafters with my very own childhood artifacts. Old toys and books and dishes like Momma served fried potatoes on lay claim to me as I do them.

In a way, these outings serve as writing research.☺ Flea markets and vintage boutiques are bona fide Gracie Lee museums.

somethin’ bout War Eagle

Ear Eagle - Arkansas

Y’all, there’s just somethin’ ’bout War Eagle. It’s a state of mind. Almost a love story. Definitely a special sort of spot in the Ozarks. A couple of weeks ago, I visited for the first time. How crazy is that? I’ve known about it forever. Of course during most of forever, I lived in Dallas.  So while all my Arkansas friends were at War Eagle, I was at the State Fair of Texas. Almost like an alternate universe thing, but not.

Today I’m giving you a recap of my War Eagle experience—what I saw and did. What I bought and thought. If you’ve been, I’m curious to hear your take on it.

get thee to The Junk Ranch

October 3, 2015 By Talya Tate Boerner 8 Comments

Yesterday I spent the afternoon at The Junk Ranch in Prairie Grove. If you live in Northwest Arkansas and are looking for something to do today, GO. Admission Saturday (today) is $5. You will find plenty of antiques, vintage, repurposed, primitive and homemade items plus live music and good food spread over 35 acres of pastureland. You couldn’t ask for better weather. If you aren’t feeling the spirit of fall, The Junk Ranch will take you there. And p.s., since today is the last day, vendors will be ready to deal!

A few pics from yesterday…
