September Sunday Letter

September 3, 2023 By Talya Tate Boerner

Hello friends! I’m baaaack with a September Sunday Letter.

Can you believe September is here? Even though the afternoons are still HOT and HUMID, I find relief in knowing the calendar has flipped from August.

Since I was a kid I always considered September to be the beginning of change because it was back to school time. Now, even though I no longer attend school, I still see September the same way. (Living in a college town helps reinforces this viewpoint too.)  Change of season, change of attitude, change in the colors outside my kitchen window.

Despite the way we often cling to the familiar, change can be a very good thing. And, sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest impact.

Dear Sunday Letter friends~

My family recently spent several days in Santa Fe, and oh my goodness, what a wonderful time we had! For over a week I was unplugged from social media, consumed no news or Netflix, did zero yard work or dog-walking (missed both though), and accomplished no real writing either.

Instead, I plugged into nature and art and food and music and family. Mainly, I got to see my KIDS!

It was a fantastic few days and a much-needed break from routine.

True story: I returned home with 392 new photos on my iPhone.

Remember when we took pictures with a camera, dropped off the film at Big Star (or wherever), and waited with great anticipation for the photos to come back in a handy little envelope? But then, what a letdown to open the long-awaited package only to see unfocused faces, heads cut off, eyes shut—proof of our vacation forever marked by a poor picture-taker and/or a cheap camera.

Ha.

What a time we live in.Continue Reading

Sunday Letter

Dear Sunday Letter friends,

After finally getting Bernice out into the world, I’ve tried to regroup and take care of a few things I’ve been putting off. Like getting Betty White (my car) serviced. Like finding a new dentist and doing a little volunteer work at the Headquarters House in Fayetteville (where I earn the bulk of my annual master gardener hours). Like working in my own garden that has been somewhat neglected as of late.

The weather is cool and invigorating right now, but gracious we can’t even buy a rain shower. Without a drop in over 30 days, I’m afraid our anticipated Ozark fall color will be brown and stunted instead of bright and brilliant.

Boo to that.Continue Reading
