Shadow of Your Smile…

A slight nod.
His wide smile crinkled the corners of his eyes.
Piercing bright eyes held my nervous gaze before looking away.
My cheeks flushed hot.
Our connection was instant, even from across the crowd of travelers in Terminal C.
Did he know me or was this a love-at-first-sight fairy tale moment?
Through the mass of humanity, he walked toward me, shifting his worn leather duffle from one shoulder to the other. His cornflower blue eyes matched his Polo shirt.
His smile faded from view as his arms encircled the girl directly behind me. The smell of his cologne lingered.

“Dear, waiting for a man to call is not proper. Besides the phone will never ring if you stare at it.”
“Oh, no mother, I’m not waiting. But I don’t feel well, perhaps something I ate? I should stay home today.”
With the house quiet, she replayed each detail of the magical evening—dancing under a moonless sky, the air steeped in sweet lilac, the touch of his hand on her waist, faint yet intense.
“Operator, please keep this line clear. I’m expecting a call.”
She wondered if fairy tales ever had happy endings?
Seconds crawled.
He promised.
She waited.

Sangria

May 18, 2013 By Talya Tate Boerner

100 Words on Saturday – Week 11: Write exactly 100 words based on the picture prompt…

I blamed the sangria.
I needed to blame something tangible rather than fate or a connection written in the stars.
Could two strangers be drawn together by the mere tug of planets? I would like to believe so, but I blamed the sangria. And the heady smell of his cologne mixed with aromas of a faraway land. Exotic and different.
I felt different.
Ignoring the attraction, we made small talk, the same in any language.
Could he hear my heartbeat? Could he read my thoughts?
As he pulled me into the doorway, I thought so.
Still I blamed the sangria.
