Where have all the flowers gone?
I can always find flowers at the historic Headquarters House in Fayetteville. The girls and I walk through the gardens almost daily. Only two blocks from our headquarters, we consider the grounds to be our personal secret garden. I’ve written about the period gardens and the house HERE, and I won’t repeat myself other than to say the place it holds in Fayetteville / Civil War / American history fascinates me. No matter what’s going on in the world (or in Arkansas), the Headquarters House is a peaceful place, a calm reminder of the vastness of life—the good and the ugly. It’s a spot that fills me with calm and restores balance.
During spring, there’s always something inspirational to see. We visit regularly to take in the ever evolving blooms.
Here’s a sample of yesterday morning’s blossoms. Today will look completely different after the powerful storm that recently rolled through. Tomorrow will come. A new day will bring new flowers. New blessings. New ideas. New chances to get things right and do good.
Yesterday’s blooms:
No southern garden would be complete without iris. Headquarters House has a variety. This soft lemony yellow against the antique brick outbuilding is the picture of old-fashioned spring.
A variety of peonies have begun blooming along the front walkway. A few others, tucked in shadier locations, will burst open soon.
Coreopsis by the old well.
White peony with a touch of pink. These remind me of the tissue paper flowers we crafted during those innocent elementary school days.

This climbing rose “Cornelia” is a 1919 variety. Every rose should smell as sweet.
Fiery honeysuckle couldn’t be more happy and carefree.

FYI, the incredible rose in the top picture is an 1817 heirloom named Blush Noisette. She’s super fragrant and nearly thornless, and I think I need one for myself.
