The Fault in Our Stars Pumpkin

October 28, 2014 By Talya Tate Boerner

The Fault in Our Stars Pumpkin

I have an announcement. Sunday night, I finally watched The Fault in Our Stars. Am I the last (girl) person to see it?ย Probably so… Although I read the book months ago, the movie isย haunting me.ย I’ve been thinking about the Shakespearean quote that inspired the title.

The Fault in Our Stars Quote

Since it’s pumpkin carving time at my house, I decided to do something a bit non-traditional. Instead of carving the typical bright orange pumpkin, I carved one of my gray-green pumpkins. I adore these peculiarย pumpkins. They seem moody and broody, and if they could talk I’m certain they would say things like “whatever” while rollingย their hollowed out eyes.

These are the teenagersย of pumpkins, obnoxious yet with personality plus.

When I saw thisย star design pumpkin from Reader’s Digest, I knew exactly what I wanted to doโ€”carve the night sky into my green pumpkin. I’d call it The Fault in Ourย Stars Pumpkin.

I gathered up all my pumpkin carving tools including a few nails, screws and screwdrivers. These would be used to make the star pinpoints.

First step of course wasย to clean it out. I wasn’t expecting this pale pumpkin to haveย such aย rich, fragrant interior. Itย smelled more like a watermelon or cantaloupe than pumpkin.

This was truly an experiment in pumpkin carving. I made differentย sized holes to give the impression ofย star distances. And I avoided spacingย the stars evenly because nature is random.

I extended rays from a few of the larger stars using a knife.

There was a hammer involved too.

The Fault in Our Stars pumpkinย isn’t perfect. Like the quote infers,ย itย isn’t meant to be.

Starry Pie came to my mind. Friend of mine who loves RV life sent me a pic of an RV pumpkin. Neat how many variations on Jack O’Lantern there are. I have a pumpkin candle and a ceramic pumpkin and will get a couple of tiny pumpkins for inside. Too many outside get smushed, sad to say. Happy Walpurgis.

You know this is terrible but I can’t remember if I read it or not. I looked at my book list and it is not on there but seems I have read it. I’m going to investigate further.

That kind of pumpkin is called a Jarrahdale (Ghirardelli). I Saved the seeds from one last year but never planted it this year. Maybe next. But yes they do smell like a melon. Honeydew in my opinion. But they are very sweet and make great pies or adding to soups and stews. So not just for decorating.
