Alabama – Auburn. The dark side of defeat.

December 3, 2013 By Talya Tate Boerner 17 Comments

Have we truly reached the point where society values the BCS bowl race over the human race? Both can be rather barbaric, but death threats to the Alabama kicker? One fan murders another after the game because she wasn’t upset enough over the loss?
I’m as passionate as the next about college football. My favorite show (after Breaking Bad) is ESPN SportCenter.
But folks, it’s only a game—not to be confused with a video game… The game of life comes with a set of social, moral rules that apparently need to be re-played and re-learned. Losses happen. They just do.

Without losses, wins wouldn’t taste half as sweet. This much I know as a Baylor Bear fan.

We’ve reached a new high low. Truly the dark side of defeat.

Agree, and I’m a Razorback fan. Brush it off and move forward.
On the News this morning I saw where a girl was shot and killed for talking about Auburn after the game.

It is insane how crazy some people get about football and forget that it is just a game. We all need to remember there are more important things in life.

I attended the University of Alabama, as did my mother and my father. And although I’m the farthest thing from a “fan” of any sport, I am getting more and more disgusted by the actions of fans of my school. First, the poisoning of the Toomer’s trees at Auburn by a deranged “fan,” and now the current nonsense. Add in the fact that the guy who poisoned the trees last year says now that he wished he hadn’t done it…so he could do it again.

    Ridiculous.

I think anyone who reacts like this to a sporting event has something wrong with them, it’s not about the sports, it would have happened at some point about something else. Like you said, it’s about how you live your life.

I just don’t understand people sometimes…there is something wrong with a person who does that kind of thing…

We are HUGE college football fans – however, I don’t understand the rage that people express.

It is really sad that tragedies like this happen over sports games…it also upsets me when people hurt each other during Black Friday. People get so caught up in their own world that they forget they are interacting with other human beings…those are such senseless tragedies.

As a mental health therapist, sadly none of these things surprise me, and yet, THAT VERY STATEMENT should shock any of us. No moral compass – greed – ME ME ME – a sense of entitlement – unfortunately, those are the new buzz words that describe more than 80% of the personalities in society today. Long ago were the days of knowing right from wrong. It’s very sad. Very sad indeed. Disillusioned and Sad….your cousin, Cindy.

Just as an observer and thankfully, not a mental health therapist, I was thinking all the things Cindy listed. Our society is SICK! But if you’re raised on violent television, movies and video games, you probably think wacked someone is the answer. INSANE!
My granddaughter, Emily, is at U of Alabama and their best friends in Atlanta went to Auburn. There has always been a sense of fun in their rivalry.

Yes I think Cindy’s list is spot on. Sports rivalry is supposed to be fun.
