Vintage Rooster Art

August 7, 2013 By Talya Tate Boerner

wordless wednesday (almost)

Grace Grits and Gardening
cock-a-doodle-doo!
Did you grow up eating breakfast with this slice of kitchen Americana?
I did. And yes, I’m dating myself.
Momma glued dried beans and seeds to a cloth pattern stapled onto a giant piece of plywood. My sister and I helped. When all the beans were in place, we sealed it with a coat of shellac.
Nana made one too. Nana’s rooster art hung on the kitchen at the lake house.
One spring, bugs attacked the lake house rooster. It was ugly.
Do you still have one?
Anyone, anyone?

Nope. Can’t say I’ve ever encountered something like that, Talya. Must be true kitchen Americana as you said. My wall had kitchen Canadiana with polar bears and igloos. Heheh! Just kidding! Fun story though. Must have taken a while to glue all those seeds and beans. How bizarre about the bugs. Poor Mr. Rooster! Worse than being henpecked.

I made one but it was a pair…1 hen..1 rooster used beans a nd colored pop corn seed glued to Masonite boards. Pattern was paper and came from a magazine. I believe it was Good Housekeeping.I was 10 or 11 at the time and am 69 now so that tells you the age. It was a free tear out.and was summertime. It was fun ,I would love to do it again but can’t find pattern. I sold that set to a museum on the causeway approach to New Orleans between Covington and Mandeville, La. for $30. That was a lot of money then. Please let me know if anyone can find that pattern, I really want to make one for my daughter before I die. I am late stage 3 so am running out of time. Good Luck, hope you can find the patterns.

Never had one but I remember doing these types of things in summer arts and crafts classes when I was young–they’re really fun to make!

Just searching for the instructions to make one of these roosters ! Viola I found YOU ! I had a great aunt that had one and I always loved to gaze at while having a snack. Had a girls weekend with my Mom and this subject came up. You said it had a pattern on cloth. Do you know if it was pre-printed or a pattern ? Read elsewhere that it may have been ordered from a magazine.

Hi! I think back in the 70s a pattern could be purchased at fabric stores, but I’m not sure. Someone should know though – everyone had one when we were kids! LOL.

Cool rooster, but did you ever glue dry macaroni to a lady’s high heel shoe and spray paint it gold. Bible school artwork (circa 1972). Mom was the lucky recipient. Come to think of it-I haven’t seen that shoe since the summer of 1972.

I did make one of these many, many, many years ago…now my niece is asking whatever happened to it because she always wanted it. I have no idea what may have happened to it but if there is anybody out there who just may have the pattern for it could you please get in touch with me. I would dearly love to make her one before I leave this old planet. Thank you crafters.

Hi, Barbara. I found this vintage pattern from McCall’s on another blog site. Happy crafting and I’d love to see your final artwork. Post it on my Grace Grits and Gardening Facebook page:) http://cottonartsboutique.com/2010/03/roosters-to-wake-you-in-the-morning/

My mom has a rooster bean picture that I believe my brother had made in school. Not sure if she still has it but I kinda remember seeing 2 of them. I have 2 brothers so I think they each made one. I’ll have to ask her about it. But, I do remember seeing it on the wall of her kitchen before she sold her house. I truly love the bean roosters and I want to make one myself!

I have my Grandmother’s hen and rooster hanging in my kitchen! I grew up with these hanging in HER kitchen. The weavels have gotten into some of the beans. Applying more shellac every few years keeps it from happening more.

I have two, 1 rooster and 1 hen. Mom made them in the 60’s I was about 7 y.o. and can still remember her toiling away at the dining room table. Still have them both but some of the beans are missing. Looking to restore them.

My grandmother, mother, and two aunts each made a hen and rooster back in the early 1960’s in south Arkansas (Thornton). I was eight or nine years old and remember watching them make these works of art on Sunday afternoons! A few of the speckled butterbeans have been nibbled on but otherwise still look pretty good. I now have the pair that my mother made.
