V is for Vacation

April 25, 2013 By Talya Tate Boerner

I am a homebody.

Sometimes my best vacations are those spent at home. A few days carved out between yesterday and tomorrow spent with a good book and a bottle of wine is more relaxing than a carefully planned, often expensive trip.

Simple is good.

John and I have a tiny place in Arkansas we visit when we want to get away from the busy-ness of Dallas. With only 892 square feet of space, we fill it with things we absolutely love—favorite artwork, vintage plates and crystal, old books, leather club chairs from the antique store around the corner.
Sleeping with screen doors separating us from the wild, we wake to the chirp of songbirds. A neighbor’s rooster crows. When it rains or snows, what a bonus…
Our schnauzers, Lucy and Annabelle, love the expansive yard filled with buried treasures from a previous dog. As I write, bamboo rustles a soothing tune.

Sometimes vacationing is a state of mind.

That sounds like a great little getaway. We haven’t been taking vacations recently. We had a family wedding last August, that was our vacation. I drove three hours to Nashville to visit my son, that too was a vacation. I miss taking a real vacation just because we want to go somewhere for fun. I’ve spent all my breaks hanging around the house. I’m ready to go somewhere.

Very nice, Talya, and I really like your pics, words, music, quote, and I when it comes to taking vacations, I swear we’ve got to be twins…haha…and of course, you’re the better looking one.=) Also, your last quote, “Sometimes vacationing is a state of mind” describes me quite well, apparently, as I’ve been accused more than once of being on a brain vacation rather than focusing on the task at hand.=) I used to blame it on having a somewhat creative mind, but today I think they call it ADHD, or rather, as I like to say in a clean with no inference to illegal drug seeds…”take a trip and never leave the farm.”=)
