Simple Pleasures #7

November 17, 2014 By Talya Tate Boerner

Saturday morning, Lucy woke me early and I dragged myself downstairs. After staying up well past my normal bedtime, I felt groggy and annoyed at having my warm and cozy dreams interrupted. A few minutes later, I was thankful to see the glorious sunrise. According to the pink sky peeping through the trees, we were in for a “red sky in morning, tigers take warning” sort of day. And the old proverb held true with winter weather and LSU headed our way.

Red Sky in Morning...

25 degrees and I forgot to put my car in the garage…but see that pink sky?

Game day is always a simple pleasure. Especially with friends. And to shut out LSU? Now THAT was a thrilling pleasure.

Later the snow fell.

I love the tranquility of snow, the quiet, cold landscape, the way it transforms ordinary into art.

What’s better on a frigid day than leftovers? Not much.

the joy of leftovers! Tortilla soup.

And yay for my Sorel snow boots! I walk Lucy and Annabelle no matter how frightful the weather.

farm girl sledding…

January 9, 2014 By Talya Tate Boerner

Snow fell during the
night like a secret,
our morning a surprise, a
winter wonderland.

No school for days and days,
sometimes even weeks.
Dusty, bumpy gravel roads
hidden, clean, tucked
beneath flat white sheets.

Conditions too hazardous
for Mr. Robinson’s
school bus proved ideal
on a hubcap sled chained
behind Daddy’s farm truck.

No rules, no roads,
shallow ditches and
summer fields transformed
into our slippery playground.

I couldn’t feel my nose,
but miles from the world
my heart soared.

this is how we country girls sled…

Snow Secrets

March 22, 2013 By Talya Tate Boerner

Overnight, snow falls.

Overnight, like a child, I watch snow drift to the earth, floating and dancing in the soft glow of a nearby street lamp. Peeping through the window, the scene is restful, yet I don’t dare sleep during a rare springtime event.
If I sleep, snow might not come.
By daybreak, several inches coat my car making it appear fresh and clean and bright. But snow hides secrets, covering dust with sparkle, transforming ordinary to magical. Buried underneath the deep snow atop my car, I know ugly bug splatters mar my window shield, a sign of my recent, long journey to Piggott.
Maybe these splatters will disappear with the melting snow.
