Finding your Why: a little graduation advice…

May 13, 2016 By Talya Tate Boerner

finding your why

When my son graduated from the University of Arkansas last May, the commencement address was given by Donnie Smith, CEO of Tyson Foods. His inspirational, “go get ’em” message challenged the graduates to do great things and change the world. He quoted Mark Twain. The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.

Heck, quote Mark Twain to me and I’ll be inspired all day long.

Finding your why. Those three little words are weighty.

For many years, I felt my “why” was to be the best parent I could be to my two children. And at the same time, while I was raising my kids, I worked in banking. I started at the bottom and slowly worked my way up to senior vice president in the commercial lending department. Was it my “why”? I didn’t know what that meant. It was my job, and for the most part I enjoyed it and paid my bills and saved some money and if we’re being honest, which we are, I loved the wardrobe that went along with such a career, too.

There seems to be an idea in this country that one should only do what feels 100% fulfilling. If a job isn’t your fantasy job, don’t do it. Don’t waste a single moment doing something you don’t absolutely love.

This mentality makes me want to poke myself in the eye. Grunt work is part of the deal. Sometimes grunt work means working for someone else. A corporation that makes profits. Oooooohhhhh noooooooo.Continue Reading

my most excellent CHICKEN SALAD recipe

May 11, 2016 By Talya Tate Boerner

chicken salad - my favorite version!

This is my favorite chicken salad recipe and the perfect way to use leftover chicken. Simple to make and super flavorful—what more do you need for an easy southern dish?

An old-fashioned recipe with updated taste.

One reason the flavor is so great is the chicken itself is delicious. Grilled chicken adds a smoky flavor to your dish. Whatever seasonings were used during the grilling process become part of this recipe. Even a quick rotisserie chicken from the deli will add lots of flavor to your chicken salad.

The other key to the flavor of this dish is DILL. If you aren’t growing dill in your garden, run out to your local nursery and get some today. Not only is it delicious and loaded with health benefits, but dill is a host plant for Black Swallowtail Butterflies. And that’s a good thing.

Dill in the garden

My recipe has two kinds of onion—green and purple—because you can’t have too much onion. Continue Reading

the unexpected side of Home Tour

May 9, 2016 By Talya Tate Boerner

the unexpected side of Home Tour

We’ve been on home tour before. We participated in the Munger Place Home Tour in East Dallas, so we know about the pain and pleasure of having a cleaner-than-it’ll-ever-ever-ever-be-again house. But there’s an unexpected side of Home Tour I’d forgotten until this past weekend when we participated in the Washington Elementary Home Tour. Things beyond the sparkle of the bathroom sink. Beyond the thrill of declaring that honey-do list nearly (because it’s never really) completed. Beyond the perfect blue sky of a day we had for it.

Things like:
