Hemingway Connection

ย
Waiting to board the plane, we stood nearly touching. Everyone queued up in typical Southwest Airlines kindergarten style, according to boarding pass number order.
ย
I was B1.
ย
He was B2.
ย
B3 and B4 stood directly behind us wearing matching orange travel pillows around their necks like life preservers.
ย
Is Little Rock your home?ย B2 asked B3.
ย
Yes, thank goodness. We will never ever EVER go back to Austin. It was just too weird!
ย
Yes too weird. B4 echoed.
ย
B2 glanced at me and shrugged.
ย
I rolled my eyes and noticed the time. The flight was already thirty minutes late leaving Dallas.
The Austin haters yammered on oblivious to other B-numbered boarders standing single-file. They clutched paper sacks of Dunkin Donuts like carry on bags. Sugary sweetness mixed with the awkward closeness and made me nauseous. Plus I had consumed too much coffee.
Is Little Rock your final destination?ย B2 asked while scanning his iPhone for text messages. Scruffy facial hair, maybe two days’ growth, gave him a relaxed yet cool appearance.

No, I’m headed to Piggott.

Piggott? He had dimples.

Yes, Piggott.

What’s in Piggott?

The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum. I’m going to a writer’s retreat.

As in Ernest Hemingway?

Yes. Ernest Hemingway’s second wife was from Piggott, Arkansas. After they married, he spent time there and even wrote a portion of A Farewell to Arms in his barn studio.

Really?ย

Yes, really.

Rummaging through the duffle, he pulled out a worn paperback. I started reading this a few days ago…

โ€œDear, waiting for a man to call is not proper. Besides the phone will never ring if you stare at it.โ€
โ€œOh, no mother, Iโ€™m not waiting. But I donโ€™t feel well, perhaps something I ate? I should stay home today.โ€
With the house quiet, she replayed each detail of the magical eveningโ€”dancing under a moonless sky, the air steeped in sweet lilac, the touch of his hand on her waist, faint yet intense.
โ€œOperator, please keep this line clear. Iโ€™m expecting a call.โ€
She wondered if fairy tales ever had happy endings?
Seconds crawled.
He promised.
She waited.

Sangria

May 18, 2013 By Talya Tate Boerner

100 Words on Saturday – Week 11: Write exactly 100 words based on the picture prompt…

I blamed the sangria.
I needed to blame something tangible rather than fate or a connection written in the stars.
Could two strangers be drawn together by the mere tug of planets? I would like to believe so, but I blamed the sangria. And the heady smell of his cologne mixed with aromas of a faraway land. Exotic and different.
I felt different.
Ignoring the attraction, we made small talk, the same in any language.
Could he hear my heartbeat? Could he read my thoughts?
As he pulled me into the doorway, I thought so.
Still I blamed the sangria.
