Goodbye Calendar Girl

May 27, 2014 By Talya Tate Boerner

goodbye Miss May

via MorgueFile

May is almost over. It was an exciting month for me because (in case you somehow missed it) I was “Blogger of the Month” at Arkansas Women Bloggers. As Calendar Girl, I was given free rein and my topics ranged from that 64-pack of crayons we all remember from childhood to the decline of rural America.

Yes, a random peep into how my brain works.

My last feature post as Miss May went live yesterday. I hope you’ll check it out. I’m talking about trending topics like #WhatJayZSaidToSolange. Sort of.

If you missed any of my Miss May posts, I’ve listed each below for easy access.

  • Miss May Intro  (May 1)
  • Growing Your Garden  (May 5)
  • Taking Back my Crayons  (May 12)
  • I Am Small Town Arkansas  (May 19)
  • Trending with Grace Grits and Gardening  (May 26)

If you’ve been following along, thank you, thank you very much. Miss May has left the building.

House of Cards (100 words on Saturday)

May 14, 2014 By Talya Tate Boerner

Jill never intended to dig such a deep hole. At first she skimmed cash off the top, just a little here and there, money no one noticed. She’d pay it back. Of course she would.

Eight years later, her game had reached a point of no return as she falsified wire transfers, forged documents and kited money across the country. Deep down she knew the day would come. Eventually. Yet eventually became impossible to imagine as the scam became her reality.

Until the slip-up.

One overlooked bank transaction.

Her house of cards unraveled by lunchtime. Really though, truth brought relief.

This week I’m linking up with Write Tribe’s 100 Words on Saturday. Prompt: she realized she could no longer hide the truth.  And p.s. this story is fiction—any resemblance to true bank drama is coincidental. No, really.

100 Words on Saturday

the chores of Summer

You take yellow, I’ll take green, I say.

My sister and I race into the backyard.

Wet grass sticks between my toes,

but I know it hasn’t rained.

Not in months.

Tugging bath mats from the line,

wooden clothespins pop and fly

in all directions landing

like grasshoppers in the lawn.

I wrap myself in a fluffy cotton rug

and breathe in summer.

My sister wears a yellow toilet seat cover

on her head like a silly french beret.

We giggle and collapse,

rolling in the dew.

Girls!

Stop!

Momma shouts from the back porch.

I know we’re in trouble.

But not really.

In her arms she carries

a bowl of purple hull peas

picked fresh from the garden.

Our next chore awaits.
