about the Setting for my Novel…

December 21, 2015 By Talya Tate Boerner

Setting: The Accidental Salvation of Gracie Lee

Today I’m discussing the setting for my novel, The Accidental Salvation of Gracie Lee. First of all, the definition of setting… Setting includes the environment and surroundings of a story. From A. A. Milne’s 100 Acre Woods to Henry’s hospital bed in Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, the setting includes the landscape and time period as well as items on the kitchen counter.

The setting for my book is rural Mississippi County, Arkansas, the place I grew up. In my story, not only does the setting provides background information and paint a picture of the place, but the setting is integral to the story, affecting tone and mood. At least I hope you’ll find that to be true.Continue Reading

Welcome to my author website!

my author website!!

I know what many of you are thinking, not that I’m omniscient or anything. Why on earth does she need an author website? Am I right? Because, silly, this is all about my new book (and future books).

Oh, there’s so much to know about this whole publishing thing. Certainly more than I realized. Kudos to those who manage to self-publish. I don’t know how they pull it off. Seriously.

When you have a chance, I hope you’ll check out all the features on my website and let me know what you think. I’m still tweaking it a bit, and I’m certainly open to feedback. My goal is to make each page on the menu engaging with information not found anywhere else.Continue Reading

Words Matter.

December 12, 2015 By Talya Tate Boerner

words matter

During the past year, I’ve been focusing on words. Individual words. Sentences. Every letter in every word. Words matter when I’m writing a book and hoping to convey a specific mood or thought. Words matter in day-to-day life too. Ours is such a decadent society, doing and saying whatever benefits us in the moment. We demand “transparency” yet use words to disguise and confuse.

It’s called politics.

Remember the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me?”

Hold your horses (another good saying). In time, most bones heal. The sting of words can slice through the toughest armor and stay with us, sometimes forever.

Harmful words affect generations of people.Continue Reading
