Coneflowers rank right up there with black-eyed Susans as my favorite native summer flowers. I planted six coneflower plants in our new front bed this past spring. As the flowers have begun to dry on the stalks, I’ve been snipping some of the heads and leaving them in the bed to multiply. I’ve also begun drying and harvesting seeds to sow in other areas of our garden and to share with friends. Today I’m showing you how to harvest coneflower seeds.Continue Reading

Lucy and Annabelle go to Headquarters House

Check.It.Out. Lucy and Annabelle recently took in a little Civil War history at the Headquarters House gardens—definitely hallowed ground, my friends. This gorgeous Greek Revival home was built in 1853 by Judge Jonas Tebbetts. Tebbetts was well known in these parts as a teacher, lawyer, city leader, and Union sympathizer, the likes of which eventually landed him in jail. During the Civil War, the house served as both Union and Confederate headquarters. (Not at the same time, obviously.)Continue Reading

Butterflies for the Win!

attracting butterflies to your gardenSince moving to Fayetteville, I’ve been working to attract butterflies to my garden. I’m happy to report, my game plan is working. I have lots of little white cabbage butterflies, and earlier in the spring I noticed a giant swallowtail caterpillar. The swallowtail recently made her appearance. swallowtail butterfly

Here’s another beauty. Butterflies are fast, and my camera is not.
