Last Laugh.

January 31, 2014 By Talya Tate Boerner

Rivercrest High School, Wilson, Ar

“Where were you today?” Daddy asked me at supper.

Momma shot me a look of whatdya mean where was she today?

“I was at school, the place I go every day. Where did you think I was?”

“I thought you were over by the St. Francis floodway. I followed a yellow corvette all afternoon. It wasn’t you.” He shook his head and grumbled as though bitterly disappointed he didn’t catch me messing up.

“Of course it wasn’t me.”

I knew better than to skip school. In Mississippi County even when you didn’t know what you were doing, everyone else did.

This post was written especially for Write Tribe 100 Words on Saturday. Prompt: She Had The Last Laugh.

Today was my Daddy’s birthday. He would have been seventy-seven.  He died twenty years ago…

Fifteenth Wedding Anniversary!

January 16, 2014 By Talya Tate Boerner

Fifteenth Wedding Anniversary

John and I said “I do” fifteen years ago today. Wow. Fifteen years skipped by in a blur of work and school and sports and drill team and boy scouts and church and life…  (Seems like) only yesterday we were buried in Barbies and Legos and spelling homework. I couldn’t see beyond the end of the week, much less envision two college students and an empty nest…

By the sheer passage of time, so much has changed, yet thankfully so much is the same.

P.S. I love this picture of John and my mother taken after our reception dinner. Momma changed into her robe but still wore her corsage and pearls…

My Little Sister

January 5, 2014 By Talya Tate Boerner

Curled inside my polka dot sleeping bag, I hid underneath the dining room table reading.

Momma said I would catch a cold lying on the floor, but the furnace warmed the air, and I was comfortable.

Santa brought me a whole stack of books.

He brought my little sister a huge stack too.

Even though I was two years, nine months and seven days older, everyone—even Santa—treated us like twins and assumed we enjoyed the same things.

My sister would never read her new books.

So really I got a double stack of books, and she got shortchanged.
