Day 3 in Iceland was spent driving from Reykjavik to Ólafsfjörður, a drive that took us about seven hours through every type terrain and microclimate imaginable. This will be a quick post and mostly a photo journal to document the amazingness. So far I’ll say this is definitely a trip to circle, highlight, and remember.
Lava fields in the Highlands area are smothered in bright green moss.
To me, this next photo taken in Hunafjordur Skagafjordur is how I always imagined Iceland to be—a lonely building in such a remote spot the only sound is the whipping wind and crash of waves.
This deep bay in northern Iceland is surrounded by stunning black sand beaches. Also taken in Hunafjordur Skagafjordur.
A bit of everything here in Kirkjuhull—snowcapped mountains, snowmelt streams, farmland, and a hay field to the left. Note the hay bales in the distance are wrapped like round cotton bales.
This monument honors Stephan G. Stephansson, Iceland’s foremost poet who was also a successful farmer and scholar.
Some things are universal. Like farmers blocking traffic. Even in the most far removed parts of North Iceland where there’s very little traffic.
Beyond each curve in the road, it seemed, we were greeted with a different climate. This spectacular vista was much appreciated after driving through thick fog earlier in the day.
Our destination for two nights, Ólafsfjörður, seen in the distance.
This plant is everywhere. Iceland’s version of henbit but larger.
The clouds hang low and often we walked right through them. How about this cute little building, maybe a silo?
I want to adopt a baby lamb.
The days are long but that’s a cool thing. We manage to pack in that much more and don’t seem to get tired at what would normally be our regular bedtime. Left picture is midnight. Right picture is morning.
Yesterday, we did an arctic sea tour and crossed the Arctic Circle. Check back later for a separate post on this adventure.
