Sunday Letter

Dear Sunday Letter readers,

Hello again. Well, I made it through a week of pre-surgery quarantine, and now I have one more week to go. There’s just something about needing to stay home that makes me antsy. Know what I mean?

It was a good week to be inside though—thank the good Lord for air-conditioning! Man alive, it is HOT. The whole area has become a dry sauna, and areas in the neighborhood that aren’t getting watered are cracking wide open. BUT, relief is coming in our ten-day forecast with rain and normal temperatures predicted. We just have to hang on a little longer and pray the break is real🤞.

I love purple and blue in the summer garden. Blue, especially, is more rare. Don’t you think? If you want to attract a variety of pollinators to your garden, it’s important to include diverse plantings in a variety of colors. Adding blue and purple will attract certain butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and even bats.

Summer of the Trombetta Squash

Thanks to my neighbor, Valeria, who shared her trombetta squash seeds last spring, I’ve had a blast growing this interesting and flavorful squash in our Victory Garden. Yes, we put in a new, small garden when coronavirus hit and Fayetteville first went into self-quarantine. I’m so glad we did. This unusual squash variety has provided so much more than food on our table.

Along with milkweed, it is one of the most entertaining thing growing in our garden. And we can probably all agree that during the summer of coronavirus, anything that provides entertainment has become a commodity.
