Specimen Frames – Dried Flowers on Display

September 30, 2015 By Talya Tate Boerner

displaying dried leaves

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of fall leaves. I collect them on my daily walks. Open any random book in our house and odds are good that a dried leaf will flutter to the ground. And as of late, I’ve become obsessed with specimen-type frames which are ideal for displaying said fall leaves. This one came from Terrain. I’m obsessed with Terrain, too. (But this is not a sponsored post.)

I could say these frames provide a great way to keep fall around year round, or your favorite flower before winter takes it, or a bloom from your birthday bouquet—and all that would be true—but really, I like the overall look of this. Part sleek industrial, part mad botanist, part urban schoolhouse.Continue Reading

Lazy Sunday Brownie Sundaes

September 21, 2015 By Talya Tate Boerner

brownie, ice cream, butterscotch sauce

Sunday morning, rain is falling… That’s how it started, a slow, steady rain matching our downhearted moods and providing comfort for those of us mourning the ridiculous Razorback loss. The rain turned to drizzle and ended rather quickly, much like the game. The skies remained gray, the day cool. What’s more idyllic than a rainy, unhurried Sunday? We lazed around the house (is lazed a word?), had a late lunch with family, napped and read and read and napped. We watched the end of the Cowboy game, which proved to be the unhappiest 2 and 0 season start ever. A bad football weekend calls for chocolate. To be specific, brownies. To be more specific, Lazy Sunday Brownie Sundaes.Continue Reading

Save the Osceola Courthouse.

September 16, 2015 By Talya Tate Boerner

Osceola Courthouse, Osceola, Ar

Hey y’all. I’m excited that my first article as a regular contributor for Delta Crossroads is included in the Fall 2015 issue. It’s an opinion piece on saving the Osceola Courthouse, a gorgeous Classic Revival masterpiece that deserves at a minimum a discussion about its value to the city beyond dollars.

A snippet from the article:

Antique bricks and mortar, a shimmering copper dome high above the oak trees—the Osceola Courthouse is so much more than the structure itself. The courthouse marks the centerpiece of the square, the town’s greatest landmark.

Osceola, named for Chief Osceola of the Seminole tribe, became the county seat of Mississippi County (located in Northeast Arkansas) near the end of the nineteenth century. In 1900, Osceola was a boomtown, a stop on the main line of the St. Louis-San Francisco “Frisco” Railway. The downtown area bustled with two ice plants, two bottling works, a wagon factory, and electric and water utilities. The town even boasted an opera house. Fancy.

To read the entire article online, click HERE. (Be sure to read all the articles—this month’s issue is dedicated to fall and harvest. The Save the Osceola Courthouse article can be found on pages 27-30.)

AND, for those of you interested in my soon-to-be published book, Accidental Salvation of Gracie Lee, there’s a surprise on page 32.
