Sunday Letter: 05.13.18

Sunday Letter 05.13.18

Dear Sunday Letter friends,

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mommas who make the world go around❣

This past week was busy-busy filled with lots of things I love except writing. I did very little writing. You may remember (or not) that my one little word for 2018 was balance. (Actually I chose two words, but…) I’m not sure I’m doing so well with balancing the things I want to do. This week I plan to devote several full days to writing.

Did you choose One Little Word for 2018? If so, how’s it going for you?

Our Island of (not so) Heavenly Bamboo

May 8, 2018 By Talya Tate Boerner

Heavenly Bamboo

Heavenly Bamboo is on the city of Fayetteville’s invasive species list of undesirable plants. One might say it’s misnamed. As in not so heavenly.

What’s the opposite of heavenly?

Earthly?

I’ll call it Earthly Bamboo.

Rumor has it that when our neighbor to the west bought her house, she found a Volkswagen swallowed alive inside the bamboo growing in her back yard.

Maybe Otherworldly Bamboo would be a better name for it.

Each tall stem includes a globe of tiny flowers. The unique flower structure makes allium a favorite for pollinators and beneficial insects. Bonus: allium is deer, rabbit, and squirrel resistant. This is a major consideration for me. Deer stroll down from Mount Sequoyah and visit our street regularly.

If I had to guess, I’d say Dr. Seuss had a hand in the design of this whimsical flower. A member of the onion family, allium grows from bulbs planted in the fall. They are thoughtful, too. They bloom just when you are sad to see your tulips wilt away.Continue Reading
