Munger Place Days: The Morning After…

September 29, 2013 By Talya Tate Boerner

Do you remember the ‘morning after’ scene from the movie Big when Josh (who grew into Tom Hanks while he slept) returned to the park looking for the Zoltar machine?

The midway had disappeared.

The rides had been disassembled and moved elsewhere.

Zoltar vanished overnight.

The only evidence of a recent carnival was litter scattered by the wind, a something-wicked-this-way-comes sort of wind.

That’s how I felt the morning after Munger Place Days. Not that there was an eerie feeling, or that I felt any ‘bigger’ than normal, but a strange, empty sensation filled the air.
The food trucks and art vendors were gone. Regular Monday morning traffic noise replaced the live music and energy that charged the streets only hours before. Like the build up to all exciting and anticipated things, I felt a bit of let down. Or maybe it was a sigh of relief.
Even days later, our neighborhood still bears faint signs of the weekend as sidewalk chalk slowly fades into the concrete.
We had no Zoltar machine at Munger Place Days, but had we, I might have wished to be little again. If only for a few days.

Big Tex-Mex?

September 27, 2013 By Talya Tate Boerner

Last year during the State Fair of Texas, Big Tex met his fiery demise. This year, just in time for opening day, our iconic symbol is back sporting a 70-gallon hat, Lucchese boots and a fire-retardant outfit.
Yes, in less than one year, Big Tex has returned to greet enthusiastic fair-goers. Yet people are so critical.
Not since the city suggested renaming Ross Avenue to Cesar Chavez has there been such an uproar among Dallasites.
After yesterday’s unveiling, a Twitter war ensued with hashtags flying…

The Dallas Observer’s question of the day—Is Big Tex a Mexican?
Big Tex Mexican
Hola Folks…?

Some think not only is his skin too dark, but he’s gained weight since last year.

Haven’t we all?

I always thought Big Tex looked a bit maniacal, and this year’s no exception. I say, welcome back!

Of course, if someone changed anything about the corn dog, I’d be muy loco…

Strawberry Goat Cheese Thai Basil Crostini

September 27, 2013 By Talya Tate Boerner

Foodie Friday

made with Strawberry Fruit Spread from Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum
This is a great brunch appetizer, snack or dessert.
Toasted Sourdough
Drizzle of Olive Oil
Berry Jam
Goat Cheese Crumbles
Thai Basil
Thai basil is a peppery, anaise-flavored version of basil with smaller, deep green leaves and purple-hued stems. The flowers make a nice garnish and are edible as well.

For this recipe, regular basil or fresh sage works great too.

It is very hot and dry here…We have had an abundance of fine fruit so far this season. Cherries, berries, plums and early peaches but the dryness is affecting the apples and everyone’s disposition.—Mary Pfeiffer, July 1933 (in a letter to her daughter Pauline and son-in-law Ernest Hemingway in Key West…)
