Backyard Phenology: Discover Nature’s Rhythms Right Outside Your Door

What is Phenology?

Phenology is the study of seasonal and cyclical events in nature—when plants leaf out or flower, when birds migrate, and when insects emerge. Think of it as nature’s calendar.

🌱

What is Backyard Phenology?

Backyard phenology brings this practice home. By observing a familiar place over time—your yard, garden, schoolyard, or favorite walking path—you begin to notice repeating patterns and meaningful changes across the seasons.

🔍

Why Practice Backyard Phenology?

• Builds a deeper connection with nature through mindful observation;
• Strengthens journaling, curiosity, and science skills;
• Helps gardeners time planting and seasonal tasks using natural cues;
• Creates a personal, long‑term record of environmental change; and,
• Accessible to all ages—no special training or equipment required.

🌎

How It Works

  1. Choose a place or species to observe;
  2. Visit regularly (daily, weekly, monthly, even seasonally);
  3. Record what you notice and when it happens; and
  4. Watch patterns emerge over time.

Hey there, nature lovers 🌼—I’m excited to share some fun news with you! This summer, I’ve been working on a special project, and it’s ready for YOU.

Now, because there has been lots of interest in backyard phenology (yay!), I’ve created a workbook and a 36-month phenology wheel journal. These were specifically designed to help you start tracking the wonders of nature right outside your kitchen window.

And guess what?

YOU are the first to learn of these new products. 🎉 (This post contains affiliate links.)
