Have you ever stopped to think that your perception of everything is shaped at least in part by the company you keep? For a few moments, think about the five people you spend the most time with. Or seven people. Pick a number.ย Now consider thisโyou become the people you spend the most time with.ย
I heard something similar months ago, and my brain latched on to it as one’s brain does. I think it’s aย powerful concept, and to a large extent, I think it’s true.
Everyone is filled with a certain energy, whether positive or negative. Theย essence of those you spend time with becomes part of you. Slowly, so slowly you won’t notice at first, or maybe you never will. But how could such a thingย not happen?
You may only pick up a mannerism or two. Or your mood changes after you’ve been with a certain person for an amount of time. You become happier. Or depressed. You begin to think like they do, maybe only in tiny pinprick ways, but it happens.
Ifย you spend all your time in a stress-filled environment surrounded by negative people, the attitudes of the place will rub off onย you.ย Surround yourself with upbeat, creative, positive people, and see if your overall perception of everything won’tย be more positive.
Of course, life isn’t black and white, cut and dried, good or bad. Situations aren’t 100% negative or over-the-moon glorious. The truth restsย somewhere in the middle, and we have to navigate through the constant life chatter filtering out what’s not healthy for us and clinging toย the good.
I know I’m rambling.
Like a cancer, negativity breeds more negativity. I believeย this is one reason our political climate is so ugly. We don’t have control of many things, but we do have control of how we spend our time, who we interact with, what we listen to, what we share to our people and beyond.
I’m not saying we don’t need critics and realism and truth, because we do. Butย there’s a way to disagree and stand up for what’s right without spreading hate. Weย need to be mindful ofย what we’re absorbingย and what we’re putting back out into the world. Just in the way we are affected byย the people we spend time with, we are influencingย people, too.
Youย are included in someone’sย list of fiveย people. So am I. And with that comes responsibility.

I agree with you! Unfortunately, some of my favorite people live far away. Does it count if you are spending a lot of time with fictional and historical favorite people?!!!
Talya Tate Boerner says
I think so, Lyn! Fictional people may be some of our best influences:)

I agree with this. I really think we have to filter out what is not healthy or good for us. Be around happy people. Thanks, June Graham. I think you are one of the happy ones.
Dorothy Johnson says
Good message. I wish people would remember that we don’t need to say everything that comes into our heads. Life’s too short to hang around rude, negative folks.
Lynn Rogers says
Loved ELO! Went to one of their concerts back in the day.
