Dear August,
You were in my dreamย last night. We were hiking along the shoreย together atย sunrise. Above the treeline, the sky flushed pink like champagne.
August, you’re here already? Iย asked. That was quick!
You answered only inย the humid breeze.
But I’m still easing intoย July. Don’t rush me.
I noticed a small yellow flower growing from a rock and stoppedย to study it more closely. Whenย I continued walking, you walked beside me.
The sun climbedย higher into the sky. Ready or not, youย planned to stay your fair share ofย days.ย I stared intoย the inky water realizing over half the year had passed me by. What did I have to show for it?
Listen to me, August, there are things I want to do while you are here.
Things like work on those resolutions I promised I’dย do this year.
Read a few more of those books on my reading list.
Notice more of the amazingย and less of the flaws and clutter.
August, do you remember all those times I triedย to wring every drop from you? Never wanting summer to end, never wanting school to start back?
There was a time when Augustย meant oneย last lake trip, a church revival led by a long-winded preacher we’d never see again, and my friend, Sara’s, birthday party.
Those first childhood friends and cousinsโthose are the people I remember best during summerย when hot days were spent climbing trees and making mudpies and singingย silly love songs that weren’t silly at the time.
That’s what I think of when I think of you, August.
Augustย answered only in the warm humid breeze.

Thanks Lyn. I thought of you yesterday as I read entries from an old garden journal kept by a young girl in the area. Reminded me of Isaac.

I usually dread August because of the heat here in Texas. I love your unfinished goals part of the post. Those same ones seem to creep up on me every month. LOL! Stacie xo

Thank you Stacie. Yes, the heat in Texas makes for a slow August.

Loved this on August — very reflective and spot on! You granddad, Reven was a great close friend of my father, Joe Hilliard, in Keiser….

Thank you and great to hear from you. Your mom was my first grade teacher. (Everyone’s first grade teacher – LOL.)
Barbara Tate says
Carole Ann Hilliard Burns– The last time I saw your dad, he held my hand and told me how he missed my dad and how much he missed Thomas. Keiser was never the same after your mom and dad left town. Loved them both.
