happy autumn!

September 24, 2012 By Talya Tate Boerner

Saturday was the first day of fall. Autumn Equinox. Same length day and night. We begin to wind down the year, rebalancing our bodies and minds as the days begin to shorten and cool.

Football. Harvest. Chili. State Fair. Pumpkin Spice Latte.
The first day of autumn went by completely unnoticed in Munger Place.

We were too busy with Munger Place Days to notice the sun cross the celestial equator. Autumn? What autumn? The mercury topped out at 97 degrees yesterday. The home tour date was moved from early May to late September for cooler weather…

According to the calendar, we have survived another scorching Texas summer. But it sure didn’t feel like it yesterday afternoon as I corralled sweaty, sugared-up kids and tired dads with strollers around the cakewalk.

Next stop….State Fair and Halloween!
cakewalk goodies!

Happy Fall!

I didn’t realize Saturday was the first day of Autumn, but I should have known. My wife and I are just getting into this whole mountain bike riding scene, and we went biking on an awesome trail in Columbia, TN, which is about 40 minutes from our home. It was a perfect day for getting out and exercising. We were having fun maneuvering through the thickly wooded forest trail and going up and down the hills. It is a very challenging course, and I suppose the first time I should have realized we were out of our league is while she and I were taking our first water break. We were sitting on a bench, just off the trail, under a canopy of trees and facing the river with our backs to the bike trail, when, out of nowhere, we were startled by a loud voice yelling “Coming through” and we turned, just in time, to see a young, slim bike rider dude fly past us along the path. My wife and I looked at each other with big-eyed astonishment, and then I yelled back at the rider, “Well, this is our THIRD trip around!”…And then I muttered, “Show off!” to the long gone young whipper-snapper!…haha…My wife got tickled and we laughed until about a minute later, when we were startled by the sound of snapping twigs, (I’m thinking “Bear!!!”) and we quickly turned to see an elderly man jogging on the path. As he looked toward us, he smiled and said “Hey,’ and we, politely, “Heyed” him back. Then, as I turned back around, I thought, oh great, now we’re going to have to pass this guy on this narrow bike trail. Well, to my surprise, and I suppose, as a testament to, at least MY bike riding skills, we never caught up with this guy. I saw him once more, far in the distance, as we rode into a clearing, and snaked our way along the winding trail. We were having a good time as we moseyed back into the wooded part of the trail, that is, until I hit a huge tree root with my front tire, and I Humpty Dumptied head-first over the handle bars!…haha…I don’t know if they have cameras out there amongst them thar trees, but if they do, then I figure I’ll be the starring in one of next season’s America’s Funniest Home Videos videos…haha…Anyhow, the first day of Autumn was a great Fall Day for me, that is, in an ironical and symbiotical way!=)

Happy autumn! It’s starting to cool off here in DC, so hopefully that trend makes it down south soon.
