Dear Sunday Letter readers,
Happy Halloween! I’m glad we have nice weather on tap for Halloween tonight because we have lots of candy we need to give away to trick-or-treaters. I sure don’t need bags of chocolate hanging around our house—it wouldn’t last very long.
I can’t tell you how many ‘fun size’ peanut M&Ms I’ve eaten in the past week.😱
Do you typically have trick-or-treaters come to your house? Do you hand out candy or risk a trick?
Spooky Eve
Yesterday morning, a thick fog blanketed our neighborhood. It drifted down from Mt. Sequoyah after sunrise and gave our morning walk a spooky vibe.
Halloween always marks the beginning of the end of the year for me. And I’ll tell you, I am NOT ready for cold weather. I’m beginning to have flashbacks of last winter’s deep freeze. Our azaleas are only just recovering.
Fallen Leaf Art
This week’s fallen leaf art is a still life. I started out planning to create a pumpkin, but I think it looks more like an apple. When I made this one (a few weeks ago actually), the leaf pickings in our neighborhood were slim. Since then, we have much more fall color. I’m taking requests for next week’s leaf art. Suggestions anyone?
Big Dipper
For a recent book club party, I served buttermilk ranch inside an orange bell pepper. I thought this would be a clever way to both celebrate fall and serve dip. And, the orange bell pepper looks a lot like a small pumpkin, don’t you think?
New Sofa!
Y’all, the big news around here is that we are getting a new sofa.
Our sectional has been in our family for twenty years now. It has endured two kids (who grew to be teens with lots of friends) and four feisty dogs; it has lived in three homes in two states. Man, what a trooper it has been.
But it’s tired of us. Especially the cushions.
I’m pretty sure we exasperated our saleslady, because it took us some time to make a decision.
The truth is we don’t take this sort of purchase lightly. When you hold on to something for decades…well, do the math—it could very well be the last sofa we ever buy.
Anyway, we still have several weeks with our old faithful sectional before our new one is delivered, so if anyone wants to pay respects, feel free. And you better believe our new sofa comes with an ironclad promise to replace any parts Gracie eats.

Happy Halloween, Your “apple” leaf art is perfect. A horn of plenty might be a challenge leaf art. We have never had any trick or treaters here in the country. It would be a long spooky walk to our house from the highway. It was a lot different when we lived in the city.

Trick or Treat was observed last night in my area. I had around 15. Years back it was easier to sit in the driveway
with my bowl, as they came in great waves. I miss it, but times change. Great choice in music…you gotta love CCR!
No trick or treaters here, we are to much in the country, but we drove into town to watch a trunk or treat event just so we could see kids in costumes. We just sat in our car across the street for ten minutes, kind of a lazy way to partake in the fun without any of the work! Your description of your twenty year old sectional made me look at mine and do the math. I think mine is approaching that age too. But it’s leather and I just polish it up and it hangs in there…actually quite comfy, so it may go beyond twenty years! Love the leaf art! Maybe a drumstick for your November one?
I love those peanut M&M’s – I can’t have them around or I eat them all. We don’t have any trick or treaters and I do miss them. I still buy some candy to have just in case any show up. Love the idea of the cornucopia for your leaf art. I know you’re excited for the new sofa – I’m excited for you!
Our neighborhood has started publishing a trick or treaters map showing which homes will be giving out candy and setting the time between 4:00–6:00 because so many are young. They also suggested we set up a table near the curb because of Covid. We always give out candy, so I participated last year and Sunday night. One thing I loved was seeing entire families dressed up, including parents. It was nice to meet some new residents, too. I love it that young families are buying on our street.
I love your leather sectional! I wish I could sit on it and have a long visit over a cup of coffee. I miss seeing you, my friend.
