Last week, I was invited to join the Ladies of the Club book club to talk about The Accidental Salvation of Gracie Lee. Having a book club select my book AND being invited to attend is one of the best things about being an author!
Oh my word, what a fantastic event.
If we were living in 1918 rather than 2018, this event would be reported in the society pages of the Daily Arkansas Gazette. You know what I mean? There was a time when everything social was printed in the newspaper.
Humor me for a moment and let’s pretend, shall we?
(Of course in 1918, my name would officially be Mrs. John Boerner and Ellon’s name would be Mrs. [insert husband’s first name] Cockrill…)

Two things I’d like everyone to know:
- Even though this event was worthy of the society pages, please don’t think Ladies of the Club was a snooty, highfalutin book club. It was anything but. This was one of the friendliest, most welcoming book club group I’ve attended!
- Please don’t compare your book club to the Ladies of the Club. I am thrilled to attend any and all book clubs with food served on paper plates or no food at all. Invite me to talk about Gracie Lee at your favorite beer bar with crackerjacks, and you can bet I’ll be there with bells on.

Home town papers do still have society pages. In Siloam Springs our garden club meetings are in the paper every month with a picture. And we do sound pretty snooty…’Primavera Garden club’ but we have the best time & really get very little gardening done!
Sounds like a club I would love!
The Searcy Daily Citizen had that sort of column and were always eager for news. It might list my mother’s trip to Little Rock to visit her sister for day or someone being on the Dean’s List.
Yes, out of town visitors always made for big news!

Talya, I know your next book is not about Gracie Lee, but I sure do wish your 3rd book would be about her. Ha! There is so much you could fill us in on G L. What has happened to her since? Also are parts of Gracie autobiographical? I could just see G L as a real person and she looked just like you.
But of course parts of Gracie are autobiographical:)
