“Whereย were you today?” Daddy asked me at supper.
Momma shot me a look of whatdya mean where was she today?
“I was at school, the place I go every day. Where did you think I was?”
“I thought you were over by the St. Francis floodway. I followedย a yellow corvette all afternoon. It wasn’t you.” He shook his head and grumbled as though bitterly disappointed he didn’t catch me messing up.
“Of course it wasn’t me.”
I knew better than to skip school. In Mississippi County even when you didn’t know what you were doing, everyone else did.

I nodded when I read this. Someone told my mom she had not only seen me out of school, but also speeding in our family’s car up and down the “strip” (US Highway 65) in Sedalia MO, where I grew up. Never mind that was unusual behavior for me–no amount of pleading could change my mom’s mind, and I was grounded. Turned out it was another girl who had the same hairstyle as I did and drove exactly the same car. SIGH.

Wish I could have seen you tooling around in that yellow Corvette. Small towns make for lots of tattle tales and gossip!
