Have you heard about my new story? The Accidental Rotation of Talya Lea? Unfortunately it’s true. A memoir…
Tuesday night I fell while watering plants on the porch. Wet flip flops, rushing around. It was ugly.ย See the little picket fence in the next pic? That’s to keep Lucy and Annabelle on the porch. But instead of moving it out of my way, I stepped over, snagged my slippery flip flop, and dove five steps down to the bottom.
The coneflowers I’ve been bragging on and religiously nurturing? They may have saved my life, for real, because that’s where my head landed. A cushion of coneflowers. You can see in the top picture how mangled they are after my “accidental rotation”.
I broke my left wrist, my second toe on my right foot, busted both knees and skinned my “good” arm. Today I found lots of new bruises.ย I’m not complaining, just explaining why I may not be around as much.
Boy, there’s nothing like a broken wrist to remind me of a few things. Like, I still cannot fly.ย And I can’t do some of the simplest things! Like, pull my hair into a ponytail.
I can still write, albeit slowly and in a somewhat pecking style.
I’m thankful my accident wasn’t worse, and I appreciate all the prayers and well-wishes from my Facebook friends. Really, this is only an inconvenience. A blip in the summer of 2017.
My husband is working in Dallas which makes this extra tricky. I’m extremely grateful to my sister-in-law, Paula, who took me to Urgent Care. She has been walking Lucy and Annabelle several times a day and watering my plants in this horrible heat. She stocked my fridge with homemade soup. And this morning she brought me a delicious scone for breakfast.
And to my Arkansas Women Bloggers tribe…thank you for the gorgeous flowers. I am feeling the love.
On a final note, the morning after my accident (and this morning too), for the first time since we’ve been in this house,ย a hummingbird has been at our kitchen window, quivering and hovering like Tinkerbell, watching as I limp around making coffee. Hummingbirds symbolize resiliency and life and energy. I’m taking this tiniest of visitors as a positive sign.

I fell over a dog on my visit to S. Carolina last March. I found getting dressed one of the hardest thing to do. I ended up having to have a titanium plate put in so I hope yours was less invasive. However, your knees look like they sure took a knockin!

Aww…you broke the rule….
My friend used a baby gate to block off the kitchen from her little ones. She had a firm rule: Never step over the baby gate. Always open the baby gate and walk through and close the baby gate.
One time, she stepped over. And broke her ankle. And had to have it surgically repaired.
I was really sorry for her and I’m really sorry for you, too, sweet Talya!
Talya Tate Boerner says
That’s a good rule and one I shall remember going forward,,,

Oh no! Hope you are recovering well. Flip flops on a wet wooden porch gave me a skidding scare once. They should come with a warning!

I’m an grateful to those coneflowers and Paula. I think Tinker was a sign that you’re cowboying up. Wish I had been free to help you this weekend.

Talya, I went back and read about your fall and thought I would ask how you are doing since it has been almost 6 months? Your fall reminds me of my wife. She has had 3 falls breaking a hip each time. She had to have 4 surgeries and is using a walker or cane most of the time when she goes out. The falls were caused by our fur babies. At the time we had 2 pit bulls and they always seemed to be going one way when Sharon was going the other. Ha! Anyway she still hurts but she is being a lot more careful.
