B is for Baseball

April 2, 2013 By Talya Tate Boerner 27 Comments

Batter against pitcher. Fielder against ball. C-R-R-R-A-C-K of the bat on a carefree spring day. The ball disappears in the glare of the sun as though the sky swallows then spits it out into a well-worn glove.

Hot dogs, salty peanuts, the smell of popcorn permeates the air—even high up in the cheap seats.

Cheering on the boys of summer, we are reminded of innocence and magic and everything good.

Play ball!

People will come, right you are. We hadn’t been to a ball game in a long time and last year went to our local farm team…is that the right term? Anyway, had a “ball”. Great thing to do on a hot summers night.

I am not a baseball fan, or much of a sports fan unless it is ice skating, but I do understand loving something. I probably love reading and art the way many love baseball. It is nice reading about what others are posting with the A to Z challenge.

I’m from the UK and baseball to me is very similar to a games kids here play in the garden or on the beach – we call it ’rounders’.

Running bases in the sand would make it even more difficult!

Yesterday was like a holiday for me! Nats opened in grand style with a 2 run shut out. Here’s hoping the O’s do as well today! Sorry the Rangers didn’t do better Sunday night 🙁

In India, we have cricket, which is very similar to, and very different from, baseball. 🙂

I love the blogs but I am not a sports fan. Tom read this is Reader’s Digest this morning and it describes me. “I watch sports the way a dog will watch TV: I’m attracted by the motions and color, but no actual comprehention is taking place.” – Mary Roach
I could almost smell the popcorn and hotdogs while reading your blog!

I really don’t understand the obsession with baseball, but being a Brit I guess that figures. Like Paula, it reminds me of rounders, another game I never saw the point in… but then I am not a sporty type at all. However, your post was definitely evocative, and I have read enough Stephen King to know what a place baseball has in the hearts and minds of American people, especially kids.

Baseball and basketball–my two favorites. This time of year I can get both! Happy now because the Red Sox beat the Yankees in game 1, but gloomy because the Celtics have so many injuries and are playing on fumes. I am looking forward to a long summer, and hope the Sox can recover from last year. But I like other teams, too, including the Rangers, Mets, and White Sox.

I oh so love baseball. As a kid, I remember watching Lou Brock steal bases. Go Cards!
