happy autumn!

September 24, 2012 By Talya Tate Boerner

Saturday was the first day of fall. Autumn Equinox. Same length day and night. We begin to wind down the year, rebalancing our bodies and minds as the days begin to shorten and cool.

Football. Harvest. Chili. State Fair. Pumpkin Spice Latte.
The first day of autumn went by completely unnoticed in Munger Place.

We were too busy with Munger Place Days to notice the sun cross the celestial equator. Autumn? What autumn? The mercury topped out at 97 degrees yesterday. The home tour date was moved from early May to late September for cooler weather…

According to the calendar, we have survived another scorching Texas summer. But it sure didn’t feel like it yesterday afternoon as I corralled sweaty, sugared-up kids and tired dads with strollers around the cakewalk.

Next stop….State Fair and Halloween!
cakewalk goodies!

Happy Fall!

Let Them Eat Cake!

September 21, 2012 By Talya Tate Boerner

I’m in charge of the Munger Place Days Cakewalk. Because I thought we needed one. That’s how those things work, right? Open your mouth, make a suggestion, and bingo – it’s your project!

No respectable festival should be without one.

A cakewalk is the perfect throwback to yesterday’s childhood Halloween carnivals, when cake had no calories and dessert came with no consequence, no hips.

I downloaded perfect cakewalk music and made large, colorful numbers, one through twelve, to adhere to the pavement. The lucky number wins a homemade cake or pie or brownies or cookies for dinner.

What’s not to love about a cakewalk?!

I think next year we need a Kissing Booth!  xoxoxo
Last year this man kept trying to sneak into the cakewalk…

Bat Signal

My mother's Professional Grade Makeup Mirror

Traveling with my mother is entertaining….

Recently we traveled to Washington DC – my mother, her fifteen pound mirror and me. Heavy and onerous, the mirror nearly flattens the wheels on her rolling luggage. The luggage she cannot lift.

Double-sided with circular lighting, you can view your face in natural light.  As if that’s helpful. It shines a beam into the heavens as though pointing the way to a nightclub grand opening. I truly expected Batman to appear outside our hotel room window. Professional spa grade, it magnifies pores, hairs, blood, atoms. It could be used to isolate cells, possibly curing cancer. But we have no time for such things.

In between visiting the sites of our nation’s capitol, my mother was busy receiving push notifications on her phone all day and night from her new friends at ChristianMingle.com, an online dating service with daily Bible verses and Christian dating tips…

Me: (asleep) Who is texting you so late?
Momma: Oh I got a flirt!
Me: Huh?
Momma: Oooh and I got a wink too!
Me: Huh?
Momma: From ChristianMingle. A flirt and a wink – that’s what they call possible matches.
Me: What’s the difference?
Momma: Who knows.
Me: Could you send them a bat signal and let them know we are asleep?

Fun, fun!  Really, it is:)
