hanging with Elvis in Tupelo…

May 5, 2016 By Talya Tate Boerner

hanging with Elvis

Oh, you know, I’m just hanging with Elvis as one does, especially when one visits Tupelo. Quick story: I was invited to the Alabama Book Festival and immediately said YES not only because—Book Festival!—but also because to get there from here, I would drive smack through Tupelo and into the depths of Mississippi Blues land.

Tupelo is Elvis’s birthplace. He lived there until his family moved to Memphis when he was thirteen.

Graceland is Elvis’s deathplace. And what a contrast between the two.

I’ve experienced Graceland many, many times. When you grow up in the 1970s just across the river from Memphis, Graceland drivebys are a normal thing—just to look at the iron gate, to see the trees in front of the house, to see Elvis’s gardener outside, that sort of thing. Elvis was ours because of the nearness of him, and news of his death tore up our little town.

I toured Graceland BK and AK, which for non-Memphis people means before the kitchen was open to the public and after the kitchen became part of the tour. Graceland is most certainly worth a visit, but, not to brag, having grown up just down the interstate in the Bat Cave which boasts its own jungle room, major earthquake fault line, and scars from a real live state trooper shootout spanning three states and culminating in your own carport, well, it takes a lot to impress me.

Really, I’m more impressed by not a lot.Continue Reading

Gracie Lee travels the world…

May 3, 2016 By Talya Tate Boerner

Oh the places Gracie Lee travels!

While I do book signings right here in Arkansas, Gracie Lee travels the world. She’s free as a bird, a regular globetrotter who apparently has friends in high places. I’m thrilled that folks have tucked The Accidental Salvation of Gracie Lee into their precious limited carry-on space, taken a part of me on their fabulous jaunts, and shared pictures. And OhTheCoolPlaces my friends (and friends of friends) go!

I mean, really cool places.

Places Gracie didn’t travel to via 1973 bicycle.

Places I had to google to make sure I identified them correctly.

There were certain things I imagined when I imagined being an author, but seeing my book at the foothills of the Pyrenees was not one of them.

Note to self and everyone else… my book cover has magical chameleon qualities! That delta cotton field and clear southern sky pairs well with sea, sand and a bold red Spanish wine.

Thank you to everyone who’s shared pictures of Gracie Lee in the wild. These are but a small sample!

  2. Orlando, Florida
  3. Madrid, Spain
  4. Cedar Creek Lake, Texas

one week until HOME TOUR!

April 30, 2016 By Talya Tate Boerner

Sometime, months and months ago, we were asked if we’d include our home on the annual tour of homes. And by “we”, I mean me. I can’t blame John. He was out of town.

Yes! Of course. How fun!!! I clearly remember talking to my neighbor about it. I was outside with the dogs. Lucy gave me the “Boerner glare”. She knew there would be work to do.

Lucy knows there's work to be done to get ready for home tour!

As of this morning, we have exactly one week to get the house and yard ship shape because hundreds of people will be walking through. And by “we” I mean “we”. Lucky for me, John is the best when it comes to making our porch eat-off-the-floor clean.

Insane.

I was temporarily insane. Continue Reading
