Papaya-Cilantro Smoothie

May 9, 2013 By Talya Tate Boerner

In Texas, we love our cilantro. In everything.

This smoothie is lactose-free, gluten-free and vitamin-loaded! The hint of cilantro provides a refreshing clean taste.

Papaya-Cilantro Smoothie

1 cup frozen cubed papaya
1/2 cup frozen banana
1/2 cubed watermelon (I used fresh)
1/2 cup fat free Lactaid milk (more if too thick)
handful of cilantro (approximately 2 Tablespoons)
1 teaspoon zip code honey

Blend.

That’s it!

Health benefits of cilantro (known as coriander in Asia):

  • Rich in antioxidant polyphenolic flavonoids and essential volatile oils;
  • High in dietary fiber which helps reduce bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol levels;
  • Rich in several vital vitamins including folic acid, riboflavin, niacin, beta carotene, vitamins A, K and C; and,
  • Good source of minerals such as potassium, calcium, manganese, iron and magnesium.
Zip code honey:
Local honey from your zip code will aid in seasonal allergy relief. Honey is a natural immunity builder used to remedy ailments such as cuts and burns, hangovers, sore throats, and sleeplessness.
I buy local North Texas honey from Bee True Products. Search the Local Harvest website for sustainably grown produce in your area, including honey.
Delicious. The honey and the smoothie.

Promise of Peace Community Garden

May 3, 2013 By Talya Tate Boerner

During the month of May for each Grace Grits & Gardening candle sold, I am donating $1.00 to the Promise of Peace Community Garden in East Dallas.

Promise of Peace helps boost high school completion rates in East Dallas by promoting community involvement and healthy living through cooking classes, yoga and hands-on gardening.

On the first Saturday of every month, Promise of Peace hosts a local market with adult gardening classes and brunch. Tomorrow’s event will include grilled pizzas and fresh lemonade made with herbs from the garden. Check out the garden’s Facebook page and website for more information.

Promise of Peace Community Garden

Promise of Peace is located at 7446 East Grand, Dallas, Texas 75214.

Grace Grits & Gardening soy-blended travel candle burns for approximately 20 hours and smells amazing….
$10.00 each with $1.00 donated to Promise of Peace during May, 2013!

Thank you!

Wine Cork Craft Project

April 18, 2013 By Talya Tate Boerner

We drink wine in our house. As a result, we have bowls and bowls of wine corks. Only so many can be used as decorations.

I decided to put a few to work this spring as garden markers. This project is simple and quick.
All you need are corks, wooden skewers and a sharpie marker.

Secure the skewer to the bottom of the cork. The skewer is sharp so it can easily be screwed in. Cut or break the skewer to the size desired. Label the cork with the plant and stake it in the ground.

That’s it!

Annabelle, my garden helper:)
