Did you know that yesterday was World Naked Gardening Day? I have a friend who keeps me abreast of this holiday (pun intended). If I know her, she observed it. While I did plant dill yesterday, I did it with my clothes on. John and I also graduated from our Arkansas Master Naturalist training yesterday! Allium is one of the perennial plants I love growing here in northwest Arkansas. Since mine is blooming now, what better time to introduce you to the lollipops of my garden. These beauties adds such quirky personality to the garden.
Each tall stem includes a globe of tiny flowers. The unique flower structure makes allium a favorite for pollinators and beneficial insects. Bonus: allium is deer, rabbit, and squirrel resistant. This is a major consideration for me. Deer stroll down from Mount Sequoyah and visit our street regularly.
If I had to guess, I’d say Dr. Seuss had a hand in the design of this whimsical flower. A member of the onion family, allium grows from bulbs planted in the fall. They are thoughtful, too. They bloom just when you are sad to see your tulips wilt away.Continue Reading
Happy May Day! I’m not sure what happened to April, but here we are. I didn’t read as many books as I planned. Sometimes that happens. One thing about April—I set out to read more memoirs. I love memoir and for whatever reason, I haven’t read many lately. In addition to three memoirs, I read a best-selling work of fiction (Oprah stamped it with her seal) and a classic literary ecological work.
Question: Do you typically agree or disagree with Oprah’s book recommendations? Just curious. (I sure wouldn’t turn down an Oprah book club stamp on my book…)
