On a hot July morning, Lucy, Annabelle and I hiked around breathtaking Mt. Sequoyah, (located in Washington County, Arkansas for those of you living in other parts of the country/world). We took tennis balls for fetching and cold water for drinking, and although we did our exploring early, the air felt thick and blanket-heavy, more like Beaumont, Texas than Northwest Arkansas.
Did I mention it was hot?
No matter. Dogs gotta play.
At first they were ecstatic because they thought they were joining the kids at Kamp Kanakuk which was in full swing on the mountain. Alas, dogs are not allowed. Rude.
Although Lucy and Annabelle had been to Mt. Sequoyah, it had been a while, probably half a decade in schnauzer years. Plus, it was their first time to really see the cross. Boy, that view never gets old. Known as East Mountain in the early years, Mt. Sequoyah, with its panoramic vistas, served as a strategic battery for Confederate soldiers during the Battle of Fayetteville. I can’t help but think of the soldiers who fought in the Civil War and how rough and extreme their lives must have been compared to ours. And by ours I’m including Lucy and Annabelle who have it better than many people.

Mount Sequoyah Woods Trail offered many wild smells and sounds. The dappled sunlight was much appreciated. Sorry, our picture is a little Blair Witchy—the result of leash straining, fast walking, and iPhone juggling.
I am in awe of this place I live.
Lucy and Annabelle are in awe of everything. We could learn a thing or two about enthusiasm from these two.
We made it home with no ticks (that I’ve found), and since I was already hot and stinky, I pulled a few weeds while they watched from the porch.
You forgot to give us a treat. And why are you still out in the sun?

Talya, thank you for this visit to Mt. Sequoyah. I have never been there, but it was one of my mother’s favorite places to go. Each summer for several years she attended retreats for the women of the church. It was a special time for her and I appreciate the opportunity to see a part of it. Dot
