Here in Arkansas (and all around) we are soaking up spring on this May Day. Literally. This morning in Fayetteville, we are under a flash flood watch, a lightning watch, and several tornado watches/warnings just ended.
And, this storm is headed to the delta.
Say it with me…Rain, rain go away. Farmers need to plant today.
We can only soak up so much spring rain before it overflows everywhere. You know?
But today I’m thinking about May Day.
And the month of May in general.
When I remember May, I think of…
- May Poles. I’ve never danced around one. I’ve never even seen one in real life, but the idea of welcoming spring with cottony ribbons and floaty dancing and sweet music (and white cake) seems freeing and joyful, the way spring should be. And of course I would wear tiny pink and white flowers in my hair. Maybe clover, too. In my past life, I think I did that.
- Cinco de Mayo. Margarita anyone? Yes. I think I will.
- School’s Out! May means the end of another school year and graduation for some. I imagine kids sprinting across the playground toward summer; graduates tossing caps into the stunning blue sky. Even though I’m no longer in school, the thrill is real and lingering. My husband is a full-time student again, and believe me, he is counting down the days.
- Derby Day. Our family has always enjoyed a good horse race with all the trimmings. And by trimmings I mean a festive Derby hat, a perfectly grilled reuben sandwich, and $6 across-the-board bet. LOL. Big spenders we are not. (Well, Daddy may have been…)
- Mother’s Day. Everyday is Mother’s Day, but we recognize it in May with flowers and cards. Yay. If you no longer have your Momma, I’ll share mine. She would love that.
- Memorial Day. Ahhh. The anticipated kickoff to lake season and the official gateway to summertime. Happy place. Happy time. Break out your flip flops and lather on some sunscreen.
- My son’s birthday. Even though they are no longer kids, the birthday months of my children will forever be special. My son will be 26 this year! Seriously???
Dear May…
Based on April’s spring showers, I’m expecting stunning, over-the-top flowers from you this year. Get busy!
Love,
Me.
?
Happy May Day, y’all.
Stay dry and safe.

Some things never change, right?
Barbara Tate says
I love May. But then, I loved April. ❤️
Talya Tate Boerner says
Me too!

I was going to ask, “but what did momma say” but the she said she loved May but she also loved April. Good attitude! It’s hard to love anything about how the weather has been here all year but my Bleeding Hearts are blooming and the birds are singing so I’ll try not to complain. Happy May Day! Do kids still make May baskets and place them on someone’s porch, knock, and run?
Talya Tate Boerner says
I always think about doing that—not the knocking and running part, but the basket part. Maybe someday I’ll do it.

Your son is almost as you Talya!

When I was in 6th grade, I was among a lucky group to wind the May pole. We wore pretty dresses and our escorts wore their Sunday best. I don’t remember if I had flowers in my hair, but surely we did! It’s still a sweet, vivid memory.
I’ve been worrying about our farmers for months and saying prayers and sending good thoughts their way.
We celebrate several May birthdays. My sister-friend, Suanne, was born on May 12, which like this year, was also Mother’s Day that year. Josh’s is the 16th, Will’s was the 23rd, which is also our youngest grandson’s birthday. Then there are a couple of other friends who celebrate this month. No wonder I love May!
