Our House at Halloween

October 26, 2017 By Talya Tate Boerner

I realized something this week. Decorating for Halloween is rather easy when I typically surround myself with antique, tattered, old things. Our house at Halloween is, well, not a far stretch from normal.

I’m not sure what that says about John and me.

Yes, we’re having a party on Saturday. I thought I’d give you a sneak peek inside our house at Halloween. I like to mix specific decorations I’ve picked up through the years with my usual decor. This plays right along into the spooky theme when “usual decor” includes vintage curiosities and antique furniture.

Entryway:

I already had Nancy Drew books under this glass cloche in the entryway. I substituted a few to add Poe and Faulkner to the mix. A vintage postcard and a raven perched on a rusty bedspring adds to the overall moody vignette.

Centerpieces:

tarnished silver

To create centerpieces, I pulled silver pieces down from topmost pantry shelves. The tarnish is perfect for the occasion. I plan to fill these with cuttings from my garden, fall branches, vines—whatever I find on the day of the party. No need to spend money on flowers. Not for Halloween.

Treasures:

scary cat

Years ago, I found this unique paper mache black cat jack-o-lantern at Curiosities in East Dallas. He’s one of my favorite Halloween finds. Old books make the perfect display pedestal.

Windows:

In the dining room area, I draped scraps of cheesecloth over the windows. I spray painted a few leaves black and hung those to create an eerie silhouette. And guess what? At Halloween it doesn’t matter that our windows are dirty.

That’s it for your peek into our house at Halloween.

I’m totally stealing the books under cloche idea for our Harry Potter party decor. AND if that cat ever comes up missing I had nothing to do with it.
