Time is on my side!
Not to jinx myself, but I’m counting down to my cast removal. If you know me, you probably remember as a kid I learned to count down to fun, important, and/or significant dates by creating a paper chain. One day = one link in the chain. Remove a link each day, and visually it becomes easy to see how close the goal is.
Yes, I’m visual. And yes, I consider cast removal to be an anticipatory date worthy of a paper chain.
I splintered my wrist on July 18. Doesn’t that sound like forever ago? That’s eight weeks. (Five weeks since surgery). Time continues to fly even when I’m trapped inside a slower than normal existence.
Things I’ve discovered in the past eight weeks…
I drop a lot of things. Like, half the things I pick up. Something about an injury must make one off balance? It’s ridiculous.
It takes two hands to do oh so many things. Opening my daily contact lens packages, opening medicine bottles, opening water bottles, tying my shoes, putting on a bra(!), “fixing my hair”, cutting up a watermelon, uncorking a bottle of wine.
My wardrobe could use a lift. In the early weeks of this injury, I watched lots of episodes of What Not to Wear. (Reruns but still very useful.) I now know Stacy and Clinton would throw all my t-shirts and holey jeans and baggy sweaters right in their big garbage can without blinking.
I hate taking baths. I already knew this, but now I really, really know this. I am, however, grateful our bathtub has a handheld water thingy otherwise I’d probably have dreadlocks by now.
Hallelujah, the body does heal. I didn’t realize how bad I felt until a few days ago when I truly started feeling like myself again. When you are living it, you don’t think it will ever end.
In eight weeks…
One thing’s for sure—the world continues spinning and spinning, just as it always did. With zero regard to my broken my wrist…
The moon moved in front of the sun and everybody marveled.
Harvey washed away South Texas.
Irma obliterated the Caribbean and wreaked havoc on Florida.
Football season started (more successfully for some teams than others…)
Arkansas Women Bloggers had another fabulous conference.
My volunteer tomatoes have started to mature.
Frank Broyles died.
The leaves started turning.
Korea launched missiles.
My book came out on Audible.
My niece and nephew made their senior pictures.
Lots of monuments were moved or dismantled.
Friends came to visit.
Trump did a bunch of stuff that either annoyed people or didn’t.
We observed another September 11.
Arkansas farmers started cutting rice.
My cast comes off in nine days!
I guess I should start collecting some names on it?
But seriously…
I know there are a bazillion people with real problems, and my wrist doesn’t compare to true health problems, disease, flood, death, homelessness, loneliness, hunger, depression, so many things. Regardless, it’s my irritant, and I’m ready to say bye-bye to it.
9 days. You better believe I’m counting down.

When that cast comes off it will definitely be a day to celebrate. It’s been a long row to hoe for you but you seem to have stayed so positive about the situation. Reading your list of all of those happenings really makes one think about how our world turns. Lots of good and plenty of bad. You could document all of the events on your cast. As always, I enjoy your blogs.

Thanks Colene. Nothing to do but stay positive:)

Enjoyed the blog, and I am so glad you still like making chains.

I do and the fact that I was able to make one shows my improvement.

I have thought of you every day since you had your accident. I am so glad to hear you will soon be a “free” woman again! It is so true that we don’t realize everything we take for granted until we lose our ability to do so many “little” things, not to mention all the BIG things! When my leg was crushed – I had several casts off and on over a period of several years! (Plus they re-broke it twice, two Christmases in a row!) My favorite cast was HOT PINK! I love your Razorback Red one, I mean if you had to have one, might as well be RR! I also love the fact that you still get joy from making chains. It’s kinda like making those flower necklaces when we were kids by hooking dandelions together. (Were they dandelions and/or clover?) And speaking of baths, I love baths – but soooo wish I had one of those handheld shower thingys — Rick says he can’t find one to fit my Jacuzzi as the spout is too big for one to fit over. (I say I know if they can put a human being on another planet – that somebody should be able to install a shower thingy on my tub! Just like there should be a way to get a new battery for my practically brand new scooter! I guess he just has to have the right kind of motivation to “Get Er Done!” And while I’m on a roll – dare I mention the handicap railing/bars I bought for him to install around my tub – but he doesn’t want to “mess the walls up” – – – Grrrr…..Hmm…) Anyhow….glad your recoup period is about over – as far as having to wear the cast, at least. Please be careful and don’t fall off the porch again! I know I certainly won’t go near a fire station again! Ohhh, the lessons we learn while our body heals! Hugs! 🙂

I don’t think I realized what an ordeal you went through with your leg. Rick needs to get that tub fixed!
