Oh.My.Word. It’s Thanksgiving week, y’all! I know I say it all the time and odds are good this won’t be the last. This year has flown by. And what a unique one it’s been. 2016 was the year I published my first book—something by the very definition can never, ever be repeated. And yes, I’m already talking about 2016 in past tense because if we round up, it’s over. Stick a fork in it.
Ov-er. Well, except for the flurry of activity ahead of us for Christmas.
So Thanksgiving week. We think about family and food and football and no, don’t you dare step on the stupid bathroom scale because during Thanksgiving week, all bets are off about calories. Who cares! And while we’re at it, let’s not talk politics, just this once. Instead let’s watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade(!), an old movie or two, play Monopoly, drink champagne. Celebrate every teeny tiny thing because, yes, some of the most remarkable goodness is doled out in teaspoons and snippets and slivers of time.
And here’s the heart of it… gratefulness should be perpetual and not only something we consider during Thanksgiving week. Some days and years are better than others, I agree. But seriously, if we’re breathing and sleeping under a roof and eating pie, there’s thankfulness.
Amen?
Speaking of pie, that picture up top? That’s the prettiest pie I think I’ve ever made, and I baked it last Thanksgiving. It’s buttermilk, one of my favorites—and HERE’S the recipe. I made the leaves using a piecrust kit I purchased from Williams-Sonoma on clearance after Christmas. Score! No longer available, but I found something similar for less than five bucks online. Go ahead and order for next year because, you know, next year will be here tomorrow. Lord willing and the creek don’t rise, of course.
One more thing. If you’re looking for Thanksgiving dinner inspiration, check out Dining with Debbie’s roundup of Thanksgiving side dishes. I agree with her that the side dishes are the best!
Happy Thanksgiving week everyone!

Yes, it’s so hard to believe this year is winding down . . . And you’re so right, Talya – being thankful should be a part of our daily lives, day in and day out. I’ve been keeping a gratitude journal this month, and will continue it on into next year and beyond. It’s such a healthy, cheerful practice and a reminder that we have so much to be thankful for.
Happy Thanksgiving!
